Which fields of work are most exposed to AI? This page groups the 328 jobs in our will AI take my job? series into seven fields and summarizes each one with the International Labour Organization's 2025 generative AI exposure scores and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projections for 2025 to 2035. Every job links to its own page with the full sources.
The short answer: finance and insurance jobs are the most exposed in our series, with a median ILO score of 0.56, and trades, engineering and transport jobs the least, at 0.23. Fields with low exposure also have the highest share of jobs projected to grow. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
How to read this page
The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).
The fields are the groups we use on the hub page, not official ILO or BLS categories. The median is the middle score of the jobs in each field; where a job page shows two ILO groups, the first score is used. "Exposed gradients" means ILO gradients 1 to 4, above minimal exposure.

What this means for workers
- Screen work is most exposed: the fields with the highest scores are the ones built on text, numbers and data.
- Every field has a range: each field includes both highly exposed and barely exposed jobs.
- Checking the output: in exposed jobs, reviewing what AI produces becomes part of the work, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

Questions and answers
Which job field is most exposed to AI?
In our series, finance and insurance has the highest median ILO score, 0.56, with 20 of its 22 jobs in the exposed gradients.
Which job field is least exposed to AI?
Trades, engineering and transport has the lowest median score, 0.23, and 90 of its 104 jobs are projected by the BLS to grow.
Does a high-exposure field mean fewer jobs?
Not always. Exposure measures how much of the tasks AI could do or speed up; the BLS outlook depends on demand for the work as well.
Where do these numbers come from?
Exposure scores are from ILO Working Paper 140 (2025). Outlooks are from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035.
