Will AI replace financial managers? The data

Updated

Financial managers create financial reports, direct investment activities and plan for their organization's long-term financial goals. Controllers, treasurers and finance directors all fall in this group. AI can now draft reports, run forecasts and flag anomalies. Deciding what the numbers mean for the business, and answering for it, stays with the manager.

The short answer: AI is a tool for this job, and demand is strong. The ILO's 2025 index rates finance managers at minimal exposure with a score of 0.37. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 10 percent growth for financial managers from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 65,600 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed financial managers are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

What the BLS projects

The BLS projects much faster than average growth and expects many openings to come from replacing workers who move on or retire. Its outlook does not mention AI.

Where AI is helping

  • Drafting monthly reports and variance commentary.
  • Forecasting and scenario models as a starting point.
  • Spotting unusual transactions for review.
  • Summarizing contracts, filings and market news.

What stays with financial managers

  • Judgment: funding, investment and risk decisions.
  • Accountability: signing off on reports that executives, lenders and regulators rely on.
  • Leadership: running finance teams and advising the rest of the business.
  • Controls: deciding where AI fits in finance processes and who reviews it; see AI policy for employees.
  • Checking AI help: generated figures and analysis can be wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

Routine reporting gets faster, so more time goes to analysis and advice. Managers also own how AI is used in their teams, including review and controls. This page is general information, not career advice.
