Fastest-growing jobs and their AI exposure

Updated

Which jobs are growing fastest, and how exposed are they to AI? This page lists the 45 jobs in our will AI take my job? series that the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects to grow 10 percent or more from 2025 to 2035, with each job's generative AI exposure score from the International Labour Organization's 2025 index. Every job links to its own page with the full sources.

The short answer: most of the fastest-growing jobs here are low in AI exposure. Of the 45 jobs, 31 are rated not exposed or minimal exposure by the ILO, and 14 sit in its exposed gradients, mostly data, computing and analysis roles. 22 of the 45 are health and care jobs. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How the two measures work

The BLS projects how many people will work in each occupation in the US in 2035 compared with 2025. The ILO measures how much of an occupation's tasks generative AI could do or speed up, worldwide. They answer different questions, so a job can be both growing and exposed.

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

Fast-growing jobs with low AI exposure

These jobs are projected to grow 10 percent or more and are rated not exposed or minimal exposure. Many involve hands-on care, equipment or work in people's homes and workplaces.

Fast-growing jobs with higher AI exposure

These jobs are also projected to grow 10 percent or more, but sit in the ILO's exposed gradients. Here AI is likely to change how the work is done while demand for the work still rises.

What this means for workers

  • Growth and exposure are separate: a growing job can still change a lot as AI takes over some of its tasks.
  • Look at the tasks: each job page shows which tasks AI is taking on and which stay with people.
  • Checking the output: in exposed jobs, reviewing what AI produces becomes part of the work, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

Questions and answers

Which jobs are growing fastest?

In our series, the BLS projects the fastest growth from 2025 to 2035 for nurse practitioners (41 percent), solar installers (37 percent), data scientists (35 percent) and wind turbine technicians (30 percent).

Are the fastest-growing jobs safe from AI?

Most have low exposure: 31 of the 45 jobs listed here are rated not exposed or minimal exposure by the ILO. No list can promise any job is safe.

Which fast-growing jobs are exposed to AI?

Data scientists, computer research scientists, information security analysts and operations research analysts grow quickly and sit in the ILO exposed gradients.

Where do these numbers come from?

Growth figures are from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035. Exposure scores are from ILO Working Paper 140 (2025).
