Will AI replace sonographers? Ultrasound work and the data

Updated

AI is a frequent topic in medical imaging, so sonographers and students considering ultrasound careers ask whether it will take over their work. The labor data is clear: sonography is one of the least exposed health jobs, and US projections expect strong growth.

The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing sonographers. The ILO's 2025 index classes medical imaging and therapeutic equipment technicians, which include sonographers, as not exposed to generative AI, with a mean score of 0.22. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 14 percent growth for diagnostic medical sonographers from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average. Scanning a patient is hands-on work. Projections can change.

How exposed sonographers are

From the ILO's 2025 index, which scores tasks 0 to 1 for generative AI exposure:

Occupation (ISCO-08)ILO bandMean task score
Specialist Medical PractitionersNot exposed0.27
Medical Imaging and Therapeutic Equipment TechniciansNot exposed0.22

The score is low because the core of the job is physical: positioning the patient, moving the probe and adjusting the scan in real time.

What the BLS projects

OccupationProjected change 2025 to 2035Openings a year
Diagnostic medical sonographersGrow 14%About 6,000

The BLS says an aging population will likely increase the need to diagnose conditions that affect older adults, and that the many and expanding uses of sonography in medical specialties are expected to increase demand.

Where AI enters the work

  • Drafting and formatting reports and worksheets.
  • Scheduling and patient communication.
  • Software features in imaging equipment, which are a separate category from the generative AI the ILO index measures.

What stays with the sonographer

  • Performing the scan: probe technique, angles and image quality.
  • Patient care: explaining the exam, comfort and dignity.
  • Noticing what needs a closer look and communicating it to the physician.
  • Working with patients who are anxious, in pain or hard to scan.
  • Checking any automated measurements or text. See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

For sonographers, AI mostly touches paperwork and software around the scan, while the scan itself stays hands-on. Imaging physicians are covered separately in will AI replace radiologists?

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for diagnostic medical sonographers at $96,590 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: associate's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace sonographers?

Not on current evidence. The ILO classes imaging technicians, including sonographers, as not exposed to generative AI, and the BLS projects 14 percent US growth from 2025 to 2035.

How exposed are sonographers to AI?

In the ILO 2025 index, medical imaging and therapeutic equipment technicians score 0.22, in the not exposed band.

Why is sonography projected to grow?

The BLS cites an aging population and the expanding uses of sonography in medical specialties.

Will AI replace cardiac sonographers?

The BLS does not give a separate AI outlook for cardiac sonography. The scanning work is hands-on, which is why the occupation scores as not exposed.

Is sonography a good career?

The BLS projects much faster than average growth, with about 6,000 openings a year for diagnostic medical sonographers.
