Will AI replace logistics jobs? Supply chains and the data

Updated

Logistics runs on data, forecasts and schedules, which is where AI tools are strongest, so people in supply chain work ask whether AI will run it. The US outlook points the other way for planners: the BLS projects much faster than average growth for logisticians.

The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing logistics professionals. The ILO's 2025 index places supply and distribution managers in its minimal exposure band at 0.38, while transport clerks score higher, at 0.50. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 18 percent growth for logisticians from 2025 to 2035, citing e-commerce and more complex supply chains. Clerical logistics work is more exposed than planning and problem solving. Projections can change.

How exposed logistics work is

From the ILO's 2025 index, which scores tasks 0 to 1 for generative AI exposure:

Occupation (ISCO-08)ILO bandMean task score
Transport ClerksGradient 30.50
Supply, Distribution and Related ManagersMinimal exposure0.38

What the BLS projects

OccupationProjected change 2025 to 2035Openings a year
LogisticiansGrow 18%About 26,600

The BLS says that as e-commerce makes logistics more dynamic and complex, logisticians will be in demand to move products more efficiently, solve problems and find improvements; that more inventory and multiple supply chains have made the work critical; and that timely delivery remains a priority as more goods are bought online.

Logistics tasks AI is helping with

  • Demand forecasts and inventory suggestions.
  • Route and schedule options.
  • Reading and sorting shipping documents.
  • Drafting supplier and customer messages.
  • Summarizing delays, exceptions and reports.

What stays with logistics professionals

  • Problem solving when plans break: delays, shortages and disruptions.
  • Suppliers and carriers: negotiation and relationships.
  • Trade-offs: cost, speed and risk decided with the business.
  • Checking the tools: a forecast or route is only as good as its data. See checking AI output.
  • Choosing and running systems: the BLS notes logisticians choose, integrate and implement planning and tracking software.

How the work is changing

Routine paperwork and tracking are the most exposed. Planning, problem solving and managing complex supply chains are growing. See also will AI replace project managers?

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for logisticians at $82,320 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace logistics jobs?

Not for logistics professionals on current evidence. The BLS projects 18 percent US growth for logisticians from 2025 to 2035, though clerical transport work is more exposed to generative AI.

Will AI replace supply chain jobs?

Supply and distribution managers are in the ILO minimal exposure band at 0.38. The BLS links logistician growth to e-commerce and more complex supply chains.

Will AI replace logistics managers?

Managing suppliers, disruptions and trade-offs is among the least exposed logistics work.

Which logistics work is most exposed?

Clerical work such as documents and tracking. Transport clerks score 0.50 in the ILO index.

Does the ILO index cover warehouse robots?

No. It measures generative AI, not robots or self-driving vehicles.
