Speech-language pathologists help people speak, understand, read and swallow, from toddlers to stroke survivors. AI can transcribe sessions, suggest practice materials and give clients feedback at home. The therapy itself depends on assessment, trust and adjusting to a person in the room.
The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing speech-language pathologists, and demand is growing fast. The ILO's 2025 index rates audiologists and speech therapists as not exposed to generative AI, at 0.24. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 17 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 12,500 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
How exposed speech-language pathologists are
The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO category | Mean task score (0 to 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Audiologists and Speech Therapists | Not exposed | 0.24 |
What the BLS projects
| Occupation | Projected change 2025 to 2035 | Openings a year |
|---|---|---|
| Speech-language pathologists | Grow 17% | About 12,500 |
The BLS links demand to an aging population with more strokes and dementia, more awareness of conditions such as stuttering in young children, and more work with children with autism spectrum disorder.
Where AI is helping
- Transcribing and timing speech samples.
- Drafting session notes, reports and treatment plan wording.
- Generating practice words, stories and exercises.
- Home practice apps that give clients feedback between sessions.
What stays with the therapist
- Assessment: evaluating speech, language and swallowing difficulty.
- Treatment: setting goals with clients and building an individual plan.
- Therapy: teaching sounds, voice and fluency, vocabulary and sentence structure, and swallowing exercises.
- Families: counseling clients and families on coping with communication and swallowing disorders.
- Checking AI help: transcripts and drafted reports can be confidently wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.
How the job is changing
AI mostly reduces paperwork and adds practice tools, which can free time for therapy. Clinical judgment and the relationship with clients stay central. This page describes the job market and is not medical advice.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for speech language pathologists at $97,870 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: master's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
Questions and answers
Will AI replace speech-language pathologists?
Not on current evidence. The ILO rates audiologists and speech therapists not exposed to generative AI (0.24), and the BLS projects 17 percent US growth from 2025 to 2035.
Why is demand for speech therapists growing?
The BLS cites an aging population, more awareness of speech disorders in young children and more work with children with autism.
How many speech-language pathologist openings are expected?
The BLS projects about 12,500 openings a year.
What speech therapy work stays human?
Assessment, treatment planning, hands-on therapy, family counseling and checking AI transcripts and reports.
