Wind farms use sensors and software to watch turbine performance and spot faults from a distance. Wind turbine technicians still climb the towers, inspect blades and components, and install, maintain and repair the turbines.
The short answer: this is one of the fastest growing jobs the BLS tracks, and AI exposure is low. The ILO's 2025 index rates electrical mechanics and fitters, the closest group, as not exposed with a score of 0.17. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 30 percent growth for wind turbine service technicians from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 1,500 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
How exposed wind turbine technicians are
The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO category | Mean task score (0 to 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Mechanics and Fitters | Not exposed | 0.17 |
The ILO scores groups of occupations, so this is the closest group for wind turbine technicians, not a score for the job title itself. The ILO index measures generative AI, not robots or automated machines.
What the BLS projects
| Occupation | Projected change 2025 to 2035 | Openings a year |
|---|---|---|
| Wind turbine service technicians | Grow 30% | About 1,500 |
The BLS says increased demand for electricity is expected to lead to more wind turbines being built, creating jobs for technicians to install and maintain them. Its outlook does not mention AI.
Where AI is helping
- Watching sensor data for signs of wear or faults.
- Planning maintenance before a part fails.
- Searching manuals and parts catalogs.
- Drafting inspection reports and work orders.
What stays with wind turbine technicians
- Climbing and repair: working at height inside and on the turbine.
- Inspection: checking blades, gearboxes and electrical systems in person.
- Safety: rescue readiness, lockout and weather calls.
- Checking AI help: fault predictions and lookups can be wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.
How the job is changing
Remote monitoring means more visits are planned in advance rather than after a breakdown. The physical work at the turbine stays with technicians. This page is general information, not career advice.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for wind turbine technicians at $64,120 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: postsecondary nondegree award. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
Questions and answers
Will AI replace wind turbine technicians?
Not on current evidence. The closest ILO group is not exposed, and the BLS projects 30 percent growth from 2025 to 2035.
Why is wind turbine technician employment growing?
The BLS says more demand for electricity will lead to more wind turbines, which need technicians to install and maintain them.
How many wind turbine technician openings are expected?
The BLS projects about 1,500 openings a year.
What wind turbine work stays human?
Climbing and repair, in-person inspection, safety and checking automated fault predictions.
