Jobs most exposed to AI: the ILO scores and the BLS outlook

Updated

Which jobs are most exposed to AI? This page lists the 37 jobs in our will AI take my job? series with the highest generative AI exposure scores in the International Labour Organization's 2025 index, and puts each next to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projection for 2025 to 2035. Every job links to its own page with the full sources.

The short answer: the most exposed jobs are office, finance, data, writing and web work, where tasks are done on screens with text and numbers. But exposure is not the same as job loss: of the 37 most exposed jobs here, 20 are projected by the BLS to grow and 17 to decline or hold steady. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How the ILO measures exposure

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

This list covers every job in our series with an ILO score of 0.55 or higher. Where the ILO has no exact match for a job title, the job page uses the closest ILO group and says so.

Highly exposed jobs projected to shrink or hold steady

These jobs combine high exposure with a flat or falling BLS outlook. Clerical work such as data entry, bookkeeping, payroll and bank telling is in this group.

Highly exposed jobs projected to grow

These jobs are just as exposed, but the BLS still expects more of them. Many are analytical or technical roles where AI speeds up parts of the work while demand for the work itself rises.

What this means for workers

  • Exposure means change: the ILO says transformation of jobs is the most likely impact, because most occupations still include tasks that need human input.
  • The outlook matters too: two jobs with the same exposure can head in opposite directions, depending on demand for the work.
  • Checking the output: in exposed jobs, reviewing what AI produces becomes part of the work, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

For the other end of the scale, see jobs safe from AI? For the education angle, see AI exposure by education level, and for hiring volume, jobs with the most openings, and for pay, AI exposure by pay. This page is general information, not career advice.

Questions and answers

Which jobs are most exposed to AI?

In our series, the highest ILO scores belong to data entry clerks, court reporters (closest group typists), bookkeepers, financial clerks and stockbrokers, all in the ILO top band, gradient 4.

Does high exposure mean the job will disappear?

No. Of the 37 most exposed jobs listed here, the BLS projects 20 to grow from 2025 to 2035. The ILO says transformation of jobs is the most likely impact.

Where do these numbers come from?

Exposure scores are from ILO Working Paper 140 (2025). Outlooks are from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035.

Which highly exposed jobs are shrinking?

In this list, clerical jobs such as payroll clerks, bank tellers and data entry clerks have the steepest projected declines.
