Will AI replace financial advisors? What the evidence shows

Updated

Finance is one of the sectors where generative AI has spread fastest, and financial advice looks like an obvious target: a lot of it is analysis, comparison and explanation, all things AI tools can draft. The data confirms that finance jobs are heavily exposed, but it also shows that advisers sit below the most exposed finance roles, and that the relationship with the client is the part least touched.

The short answer: AI is likely to change financial advice substantially, but on current evidence not to remove the advisor. The ILO's 2025 index places financial and investment advisers in its significant-exposure band, and notes their exposure has risen since 2023. More routine finance roles, such as finance clerks, brokers and credit officers, are more exposed still. US projections show little growth for personal financial advisors, with most openings coming from people leaving the job. Forecasts can change as the technology does.

How exposed finance jobs are

The ILO Working Paper 140 (2025) rates every task in a job from 0 to 1 for how far generative AI could do it, then groups jobs into bands: not exposed, minimal exposure, and gradients 1 to 4, where 4 is the most exposed.

Occupation (ISCO-08)ILO categoryMean task score (0 to 1)
Statistical, Finance and Insurance ClerksGradient 4 (highest)0.64
Securities and Finance Dealers and BrokersGradient 4 (highest)0.63
Financial AnalystsGradient 4 (highest)0.62
Credit and Loans OfficersGradient 4 (highest)0.60
Bank Tellers and Related ClerksGradient 30.58
Financial and Investment AdvisersGradient 30.57
Finance ManagersMinimal exposure0.37

The ILO names investment advisers among the occupations whose exposure increased between 2023 and 2025, as AI became able to handle more specialized professional tasks. Finance managers, whose work centers on decisions, people and accountability, are much less exposed.

What projections and employers expect

  • Slow US growth: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of personal financial advisors to grow 1 percent from 2025 to 2035, slower than average, with about 17,100 openings a year, mostly to replace workers who move to other occupations or retire (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). The BLS summary does not attribute this to AI.
  • Finance technology growing: in the WEF's 2025 survey, fintech engineers and big data specialists are among the fastest-growing roles, while bank tellers are among the fastest-declining (WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025).
  • Workers using AI report gains: in the OECD's 2022 surveys of finance and manufacturing workers, 63% of AI users said AI had improved their enjoyment at work, and over 80% of those working with AI reported higher performance (OECD Employment Outlook 2023).

Tasks moving to AI

  • Gathering and summarizing client information and documents.
  • First drafts of reports, plans and meeting notes.
  • Comparing products, scenarios and portfolios.
  • Routine client questions and updates.
  • Monitoring accounts and flagging changes for review.

What stays with the advisor

  • Understanding the person: goals, fears, family situation and what they will actually stick to.
  • Trust: clients making big decisions about their money still tend to want a person they can hold to account.
  • Judgment on the whole picture: tax, family, health and timing together, not one product at a time.
  • Behavioral coaching: helping clients stay the course when markets fall.
  • Checking the AI: generative AI can produce confident but false content (NIST AI 600-1). A plausible wrong figure in a financial plan can cost a client real money.

What this means for the job

The likely shift is the one the ILO describes for exposed occupations generally: transformation rather than replacement. Advisors who let AI handle preparation and paperwork can spend more time with clients, or serve more of them. The parts of the job that are pure analysis and product comparison are the ones under most pressure; the parts built on relationships and judgment are the least.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for personal financial advisors at $105,070 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace financial advisors?

On current evidence, AI is more likely to change the job than remove it. The ILO places financial and investment advisers in its significant-exposure band, and US projections show slow but positive growth.

Which finance jobs are most exposed to AI?

In the ILO index: statistical, finance and insurance clerks, securities dealers and brokers, financial analysts and credit and loans officers, all in the highest exposure gradient.

Is financial advising a good career with AI?

The BLS projects 1 percent US growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 17,100 openings a year, mostly from replacement. Advisors strong in client relationships and judgment are best placed.

What will AI do in financial advice?

Gather and summarize information, draft plans and reports, compare scenarios and handle routine questions. Understanding clients, trust and whole-picture judgment stay with advisors.

Can I trust AI for financial advice?

AI-generated content can be confidently wrong, so figures and recommendations need checking by someone qualified before you act on them.
