Will AI replace copywriters? Ads, web copy and the data

Updated

Ad copy, product descriptions and web pages are common uses for AI writing tools, so copywriters ask what that means for their work. Here the US outlook is direct: the BLS says AI for writing is projected to dampen demand.

The short answer: AI is reducing demand for routine copywriting, but not replacing copywriters who own strategy and results. The ILO's 2025 index places authors and related writers, which include copywriters, and advertising and marketing professionals in its third gradient, both at 0.55. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics, which names copywriters within writers and authors, projects little or no change from 2025 to 2035 and says increasing use of AI for writing is projected to dampen demand. Projections can change.

How exposed copywriting is

From the ILO's 2025 index, which scores tasks 0 to 1 for generative AI exposure:

The BLS describes copywriters as preparing advertisements to promote the sale of a good or service, often working with a client on content such as a slogan. It says increasing use of AI for writing is projected to dampen demand for writers and authors.

Copy tasks AI is taking on

  • Product descriptions at volume.
  • Variations of ad headlines and calls to action.
  • First drafts of web pages and emails.
  • Rewriting for length, tone and format.
  • Social posts from existing material.

What stays with the copywriter

  • The idea: the angle, the campaign concept, the line people remember.
  • Knowing the customer: what makes this audience act.
  • Brand voice: keeping copy consistent and distinct, not generic.
  • Accuracy: checking claims in AI drafts, which can invent features or facts. See checking AI output.
  • Results: testing, learning and owning what the copy achieves.

AI copy and copyright

In the US, the Copyright Office concluded in 2025 that copyright does not extend to purely AI-generated material, that prompts alone do not currently provide sufficient control, and that human authors can hold copyright in their own expression perceptible in AI outputs, in creative selection, coordination or arrangement, and in creative modifications. Its registration guidance asks applicants to disclose more than a de minimis amount of AI-generated material (US Copyright Office, Copyright and AI Part 2). See AI-generated work and copyright.

For a copywriter, the parts you write, select and substantially edit yourself are what can be protected.

How the work is changing

High-volume, generic copy is where AI competes most directly. Copywriters who bring concepts, strategy and editing judgment, and use AI for drafts and variations, are in the stronger position.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for writers and authors at $76,910 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
