Will AI replace UX designers? Research, interfaces and the data

Updated

AI tools can now generate screens, wireframes and whole app layouts from a prompt, so UX and UI designers ask whether their job is next. The data points to change rather than replacement, and the US outlook for interface designers is growth.

The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing UX designers. The ILO's 2025 index has no separate UX code; the closest occupations, graphic and multimedia designers and web and multimedia developers, sit in its second and fourth gradients. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 6 percent growth for web and digital interface designers from 2025 to 2035, while saying better tools and AI may soften growth in web work. Understanding users stays human. Projections can change.

How exposed UX design is

From the ILO's 2025 index, which scores tasks 0 to 1 for generative AI exposure:

Occupation (ISCO-08)ILO bandMean task score
Web and Multimedia DevelopersGradient 40.60
Graphic and Multimedia DesignersGradient 20.49
Systems AnalystsGradient 20.49

UX work spans all three: visual design, building interfaces and analyzing how systems should work. Producing screens is the most exposed part; research with users is the least.

What the BLS projects

OccupationProjected change 2025 to 2035
Web and digital interface designersGrow 6%
Web developersGrow 4%

The BLS projects about 13,600 openings a year for web developers and digital designers combined. It expects growth as e-commerce expands, and says improving tools and increasing use of AI for web development may soften that growth.

UX tasks AI is taking on

  • First-draft wireframes and screen layouts.
  • Variations of components and visual styles.
  • Placeholder content and microcopy drafts.
  • Summarizing interview notes and survey responses.
  • Turning designs into prototype code.

What stays with the UX designer

  • User research: talking to and watching real people, and noticing what they do not say.
  • Problem framing: deciding what to build before deciding what it looks like.
  • Accessibility: making sure products work for everyone, tested with real users and devices.
  • Trade-offs: balancing user needs, business goals and technical limits with a team.
  • Checking AI summaries: an AI summary of research can miss or invent findings. See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

Producing screens is getting faster and cheaper, which shifts value toward research, strategy and judgment. Designers who can show why a design works for users, not just what it looks like, are in the stronger position. Designing AI features themselves, where users need to understand and check what an agent does, is also design work; see human in the loop and accountability.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for web developers at $99,520 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace UX designers?

Not on current evidence. The BLS projects 6 percent US growth for web and digital interface designers from 2025 to 2035, though it notes AI may soften growth in web work.

Will AI replace UI designers?

Producing screens is the most exposed part of UI work. Judgment about users, accessibility and trade-offs is much less exposed.

How exposed is UX design to AI?

The ILO has no separate UX code. Related occupations score from 0.49 for graphic and multimedia designers to 0.60 for web and multimedia developers.

How do UX designers use AI?

For draft wireframes, layout variations, placeholder copy, summarizing research notes and prototype code, with the designer checking the output.

What UX work stays human?

User research, problem framing, accessibility testing, balancing trade-offs with a team and checking AI summaries of research.
