Image generators can produce a logo, a poster or a product shot in seconds, which makes graphic designers understandably uneasy. The data shows real pressure on design jobs, but less than many expect, and it points to the parts of design that depend on judgment and clients rather than producing images.
The short answer: AI is changing graphic design and may reduce the number of design jobs, but it is not on course to remove the profession. The ILO's 2025 index places graphic and multimedia designers in its moderate-exposure band. US projections expect a small decline in graphic designer employment, with AI named as one reason, while still projecting thousands of openings a year. Producing variations and first drafts is moving to AI; understanding the brief, the brand and the audience stays with designers. No projection is certain.
How exposed design and creative jobs are
How to read the table: the mean task score runs from 0 to 1, and the band is the ILO's grouping, from not exposed through minimal exposure to gradient 4, the highest (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025). More on the method in will AI take my job?
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO category | Mean task score (0 to 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Graphic and Multimedia Designers | Gradient 2 | 0.49 |
| Photographers | Gradient 1 | 0.39 |
| Interior Designers and Decorators | Minimal exposure | 0.37 |
| Product and Garment Designers | Minimal exposure | 0.35 |
| Visual Artists | Not exposed | 0.21 |
Gradient 2 means moderate exposure with a mix of highly exposed and minimally exposed tasks. For comparison, web and multimedia developers are in the highest gradient at 0.60, and authors and related writers in gradient 3 at 0.55.
Hiring outlook to 2035
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of graphic designers to decline 2 percent from 2025 to 2035, and states that automated design tools, such as AI, are projected to make graphic designers more productive and reduce the need for these workers. It still projects about 16,000 openings a year on average (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
What AI tools handle now
- Generating concepts, mood boards and variations.
- Resizing and adapting designs for different formats.
- Background removal, retouching and image cleanup.
- Stock-style images and simple illustrations.
- First drafts of layouts and social media assets.
What stays with the designer
- Understanding the brief: what the client needs, which is often not what they first ask for.
- Brand and system thinking: keeping work consistent across products, years and channels.
- Taste and editing: choosing, refining and rejecting, which AI cannot do for you.
- Working with people: presenting, defending and revising work with clients and teams.
- Checking the output: AI images can contain errors, odd details or text problems, and may resemble existing work too closely.
Ownership of AI-assisted designs
Copyright matters a lot in design. The US Copyright Office concluded in 2025 that copyright does not extend to purely AI-generated material, that prompts alone do not currently provide sufficient control, and that human authors can hold copyright in their own expression that is perceptible in AI outputs, in the creative selection, coordination or arrangement of material, and in creative modifications of the outputs (US Copyright Office, Copyright and AI Part 2). For a designer, the human creative work on top of an AI draft is what can be protected. Our page on AI-generated work and copyright covers this in more detail.
The job from here
For many designers, AI is becoming a fast drafting tool inside existing software, and the job shifts toward art direction: briefing the tool, selecting and refining what it produces, and holding the quality and brand line. Designers who lean into strategy, systems and client work, and who can direct AI tools well, are best placed. The tasks under most pressure are high-volume, low-differentiation production work.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for graphic designers at $62,960 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
Questions and answers
Will AI replace graphic designers?
Not as a profession on current evidence, but it may reduce demand. The BLS projects a 2 percent decline in US graphic designer employment from 2025 to 2035, citing AI design tools, with about 16,000 openings a year.
How exposed is graphic design to AI?
The ILO places graphic and multimedia designers in gradient 2, moderate exposure, with a mean task score of 0.49.
What design work can AI not do?
Understanding the client and the brief, brand and system thinking, taste and editing, working with people and checking the output.
Can I copyright a design made with AI?
According to the US Copyright Office, purely AI-generated material is not protected, but human creative contributions, such as selection, arrangement and creative modifications, can be.
What is the career outlook for graphic design?
There are still many openings each year, but the work is shifting toward art direction, strategy and directing AI tools. High-volume production work is under the most pressure.
