Robot cocktail machines show up at airports and arenas, and many bars now take orders and payments through an app or a QR code. Bartending still means reading a room, mixing drinks to order, checking IDs and deciding when a guest has had enough.
The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing bartenders. The ILO's 2025 index rates bartenders as not exposed to generative AI, with a score of 0.26. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 121,200 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
How exposed bartenders are
The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO category | Mean task score (0 to 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Bartenders | Not exposed | 0.26 |
The ILO index measures generative AI, not drink-dispensing machines or ordering apps.
What the BLS projects
| Occupation | Projected change 2025 to 2035 | Openings a year |
|---|---|---|
| Bartenders | Grow 5% | About 121,200 |
Most openings come from replacing people who move to other jobs or leave the workforce, which is common in this field.
Where AI and automation are helping
- Ordering and payment through apps, tablets and QR codes.
- Inventory counts, reorders and pour tracking.
- Drafting drink menus, specials and recipe costing.
- Scheduling shifts and forecasting busy nights.
What stays with the bartender
- Guests: greeting people, reading the mood and making a bar somewhere people want to stay.
- Responsibility: checking identification and judging when someone should stop drinking, as the BLS duties list includes.
- Craft: mixing drinks to order and adjusting them to taste.
- Checking AI help: recipe costs and menu text from a chatbot can be confidently wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.
How the job is changing
Technology is taking over parts of ordering, payment and stock control. Hospitality, judgment and the drinks themselves stay with people.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for bartenders at $34,340 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: no formal educational credential. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
Questions and answers
Will AI replace bartenders?
Not on current evidence. The ILO rates bartenders not exposed to generative AI, and the BLS projects 5 percent growth from 2025 to 2035.
Will robot bartenders take over?
Machines can pour set drinks in some venues, but checking IDs, judging intoxication and serving guests still need people.
How many bartender openings are expected?
The BLS projects about 121,200 openings a year, on average, over the decade.
What bartending work stays human?
Guest service, responsible serving, mixing drinks to order and checking AI menu and cost suggestions.
