Wood product factories run computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines that cut, shape and drill parts from a digital design. Woodworkers, including cabinetmakers, furniture finishers and machine setters, still set up and run the machines, fit and finish pieces by hand and check the quality.
The short answer: generative AI barely touches this work, but factory automation is already reducing demand. The ILO's 2025 index rates cabinetmakers and woodworking machine operators as not exposed, with scores of 0.16 and 0.22. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 2 percent decline for woodworkers from 2025 to 2035, with about 18,100 openings a year, all from replacing workers who leave. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
How exposed woodworkers are
The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO category | Mean task score (0 to 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet-makers and Related Workers | Not exposed | 0.16 |
| Woodworking Machine Tool Setters and Operators | Not exposed | 0.22 |
The ILO index measures generative AI, not robots or automated machines.
What the BLS projects
| Occupation | Projected change 2025 to 2035 | Openings a year |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinetmakers and bench carpenters | Decline 3% | In total |
| Furniture finishers | Decline 3% | In total |
| Sawing machine setters and operators | Decline 1% | In total |
| Woodworking machine setters and operators, except sawing | Decline 3% | In total |
| Total for woodworkers | Decline 2% | About 18,100 |
The BLS says overall demand for woodworkers is expected to be reduced by automation, especially the use of CNC machines in wood product manufacturing. It adds that home renovation and outdoor commercial structures may keep up demand in some areas. Its outlook does not mention AI.
What automation is taking on
- Cutting, shaping and drilling parts on CNC machines.
- Repeat production runs of the same design.
- Generating cut lists and layouts from drawings.
- Drafting quotes and order paperwork.
What stays with woodworkers
- Machine setup: programming, loading and adjusting CNC equipment.
- Fitting and finishing: assembly, sanding and finishing by hand.
- Custom work: one-off cabinets and furniture built to a client's space.
- Checking AI help: generated cut lists and quotes can be wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.
How the job is changing
CNC programming and setup skills are worth more as machines take over repeat cutting, while custom and renovation work still relies on hand skills. This page is general information, not career advice.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for woodworkers at $45,310 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: high school diploma or equivalent. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
