Will AI replace carpenters? Job sites, tools and the data

Updated

Carpentry is measuring, cutting, fitting and fixing, on sites where no two jobs are quite the same. AI shows up around the work, in estimates, plans and design software, but not in framing a wall or hanging a door.

The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing carpenters. The ILO's 2025 index rates carpenters and joiners as not exposed to generative AI, at 0.13. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 4 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, about as fast as average, with about 62,800 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed carpenters are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

Occupation (ISCO-08)ILO categoryMean task score (0 to 1)
Carpenters and JoinersNot exposed0.13
Insulation WorkersNot exposed0.13

The ILO index measures generative AI, not robots or factory machinery such as automated cutting in prefabrication.

Where AI is helping carpenters

  • Drafting estimates, quotes and material lists.
  • Reading and summarizing plans and specifications.
  • Design and layout options for clients to compare.
  • Scheduling, invoices and client messages for small businesses.

What stays with the carpenter

  • The build: measuring, cutting and shaping materials and constructing frames, walls, floors and doorframes.
  • Problem solving on site: old houses, uneven floors and plans that do not match what is there.
  • Finish work: fitting windows, molding and fixtures to a standard clients notice.
  • Checking AI help: estimates and material lists can be confidently wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

AI mainly speeds up the office side of carpentry: quotes, plans and paperwork. Carpenters who run their own business may gain the most from it, while the trade skills themselves stay central.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for carpenters at $60,580 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: high school diploma or equivalent. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

How many carpenter openings are expected?

The BLS projects about 62,800 openings a year.

How can AI help carpenters?

With estimates, material lists, plan summaries, design options and business paperwork.

What carpentry work stays human?

Building and installing, solving problems on site, finish work and checking any AI estimates.
