Will AI replace teacher assistants? The data

Updated

Teacher assistants work with a licensed teacher to give students extra attention and instruction. They help small groups and individual students, support students with disabilities, supervise classrooms and help with lessons and records. AI tools can help with practice material and paperwork. Working with children in the room stays with people.

The short answer: school budgets matter more than AI on current figures. The ILO's 2025 index rates teachers' aides as not exposed, with a score of 0.24. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects little or no change in teacher assistant jobs from 2025 to 2035, with about 176,200 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed teacher assistants are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

What the BLS projects

OccupationProjected change 2025 to 2035Openings a year
Teacher assistantsLittle or no change (0%)About 176,200

The BLS says most openings will come from replacing workers who move on or retire, and that jobs may depend on school district budgets: schools may cut assistant positions in a shortfall and hire more in a surplus. Its outlook does not mention AI.

Where AI is helping

  • Making extra practice questions and reading material.
  • Adapting material for different reading levels.
  • Drafting notes, records and messages for the teacher to review.

What stays with teacher assistants

  • One-on-one help: noticing when a student is stuck and helping in the moment.
  • Supporting students with disabilities: care and help that need a person present.
  • Supervision: keeping students safe in class, at lunch and on trips.
  • Checking AI help: generated worksheets and answers can be wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

Schools are writing rules for AI use by students and staff, and assistants often help students use classroom software. Student data is protected, so assistants follow school rules on which tools are allowed. This page is general information, not career advice.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for teacher assistants at $36,780 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: some college, no degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
