Will AI replace childcare workers? Care, play and the data

Updated

Childcare is about keeping young children safe, fed, rested and learning. AI shows up in parent apps, attendance logs and activity ideas. Nobody expects a chatbot to change diapers, settle a toddler or notice that a child is not themselves today.

The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing childcare workers. The ILO's 2025 index rates child care workers as not exposed to generative AI, at 0.19. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 2 percent decline from 2025 to 2035, without naming technology as the cause, and still about 150,300 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed childcare workers are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

What the BLS projects

OccupationProjected change 2025 to 2035Openings a year
Childcare workersDecline 2%About 150,300

The BLS says all of these openings are expected to come from replacing workers who move to other occupations or leave the labor force.

Where AI is helping in childcare

  • Daily reports and photos for parents.
  • Attendance, billing and staff scheduling.
  • Activity and lesson ideas for different ages.
  • Translating messages for families.

What stays with the childcare worker

  • Safety: supervising children and keeping them safe.
  • Care: meals and snacks, hygiene and diaper changes.
  • Learning: activities and routines that balance play, physical activity and rest.
  • Noticing: watching for signs of emotional or developmental problems and keeping records of progress.
  • Checking AI help: activity ideas and drafted reports can be wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.
  • Privacy: photos and notes about children are sensitive personal data. See AI agents and personal data.

How the job is changing

Childcare centers increasingly run on apps for parents, attendance and billing, which adds screen time for staff but leaves the care itself unchanged.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for childcare workers at $34,980 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: high school diploma or equivalent. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace childcare workers?

Not on current evidence. The ILO rates child care workers not exposed to generative AI (0.19). The BLS projects a 2 percent decline from 2025 to 2035 but does not cite technology.

How many childcare openings are expected?

The BLS projects about 150,300 openings a year, all from replacing workers who leave.

How is AI used in childcare?

For parent updates, attendance and billing, activity ideas and translated messages.

What childcare work stays human?

Supervision and safety, daily care, play and learning, noticing problems and protecting children's data.
