Image generators can now produce a convincing product shot or a stock photo from a sentence of text. For photographers, that is a direct question about their market. Here the official US outlook is unusually specific: it names AI as a factor for some photography work, while the overall projection is close to flat.
The short answer: AI is replacing some photography, not photographers as a whole. The ILO's 2025 index places photographers in its lowest exposure gradient. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 1 percent decline from 2025 to 2035 and says stock photography is projected to be partially replaced by AI-generated images. Work that needs a camera at a real event, place or person stays human. These are projections, not certainties.
How exposed photographers are
From the ILO's 2025 index, which scores tasks 0 to 1 for generative AI exposure:
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO band | Mean task score |
|---|---|---|
| Graphic and Multimedia Designers (for comparison) | Gradient 2 | 0.49 |
| Photographers | Gradient 1 | 0.39 |
| Broadcasting and Audio-visual Technicians | Minimal exposure | 0.35 |
Gradient 1 means low overall exposure with some highly exposed tasks. Editing and retouching are more exposed than shooting.
What the BLS projects
| Occupation | Projected change 2025 to 2035 | Openings a year |
|---|---|---|
| Photographers | Decline 1% | About 10,700 |
The BLS gives two reasons for the decline: the ease and quality of smartphone photos may reduce the need for professionals, and some kinds of photography, such as stock photos, are projected to be partially replaced by AI-generated images. It also expects self-employed photographers to grow in number as more amateurs and hobbyists enter the field. About two in three photographers are self-employed.
Which photography is most and least exposed
| More exposed to AI | Less exposed to AI |
|---|---|
| Stock and generic illustrative images | Weddings, events and portraits |
| Simple product shots on plain backgrounds | News and documentary work |
| Retouching, background removal, culling | Real estate, architecture and specific places |
| Concept and mood images | Work where the image must show what actually happened |
The dividing line is proof. A generated image can look right; it cannot show a real wedding, a real product as it is, or a real event.
What stays with the photographer
- Being there: the event, the person, the light on the day.
- Directing people: putting subjects at ease and getting the expression.
- Authenticity: images that clients need to be real, not generated.
- Client relationships and the business side of self-employed work.
- Taste: choosing and finishing the frame, including with AI editing tools.
AI images and copyright
In the US, the Copyright Office concluded in 2025 that copyright does not extend to purely AI-generated material, that prompts alone do not currently provide sufficient control, and that human authors can hold copyright in their own expression perceptible in AI outputs, in creative selection, coordination or arrangement, and in creative modifications. Its registration guidance asks applicants to disclose more than a de minimis amount of AI-generated material (US Copyright Office, Copyright and AI Part 2). See AI-generated work and copyright.
For a photographer, photos you take remain your own work; what changes is the status of fully generated images and heavily AI-edited ones.
How the work is changing
AI is speeding up editing and culling and competing directly with stock and generic images. Photographers who sell presence, authenticity and service rather than generic images are on firmer ground.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for photographers at $44,660 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: high school diploma or equivalent. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
Questions and answers
Will AI replace photographers?
Not as a whole on current evidence. The ILO places photographers in its lowest exposure gradient, and the BLS projects a 1 percent decline from 2025 to 2035, with stock photos projected to be partially replaced by AI-generated images.
Will AI replace stock photography?
The BLS says some kinds of photography, such as stock photos, are projected to be partially replaced by AI-generated images.
Will AI replace wedding and event photographers?
These are among the least exposed kinds of photography, because the work requires being present at a real event with real people.
Can AI-generated images be copyrighted?
According to the US Copyright Office, purely AI-generated material is not protected, while human creative contributions, such as selection, arrangement and modification, can be.
Is photography still a good career?
The BLS projects about 10,700 openings a year, and about two in three photographers are self-employed, so business and client skills matter alongside camera work.
