Will AI replace painters? Color apps, spray robots and the data

Updated

Apps can now show a room in a new color from a phone photo, and a few robots can spray paint large, flat walls on construction sites. Most painting still means prep: moving furniture, filling cracks, sanding, masking and cutting in clean lines by hand.

The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing painters. The ILO's 2025 index rates painters and spray painters as not exposed to generative AI, with scores of 0.12 to 0.13. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 3 percent growth for construction and maintenance painters from 2025 to 2035, about average, with about 24,900 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed painters are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

Painters and Related WorkersNot exposed0.13
Spray Painters and VarnishersNot exposed0.12

The ILO index measures generative AI, not painting robots.

What the BLS projects

The BLS links demand to new construction and to property owners who sell or lease, and notes that homeowners who paint themselves temper growth.

Where AI and software are helping

  • Color previews from a photo of the room.
  • Measuring walls and estimating paint and labor.
  • Quotes, scheduling and customer messages.
  • Spray robots for some large, repetitive surfaces.

What stays with the painter

  • Prep: protecting floors and furniture, filling holes and sanding surfaces.
  • Finish: priming, cutting in and applying paint evenly by brush, roller or sprayer.
  • Access: setting up ladders and scaffolding and working safely around a lived-in home.
  • Checking AI help: automated estimates and color previews can be confidently wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

Estimating and selling the job are going digital, and robots may take some large commercial walls. Prep and finish work in homes and occupied buildings stays with people.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for painters construction and maintenance at $49,400 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: no formal educational credential. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace painters?

Not on current evidence. The ILO rates painters not exposed to generative AI, and the BLS projects 3 percent growth for construction and maintenance painters from 2025 to 2035.

Can robots paint houses?

Some robots spray large, flat walls, but prep, trim and work in occupied homes still need painters.

How many painter openings are expected?

The BLS projects about 24,900 openings a year, on average, over the decade.

What painting work stays human?

Surface prep, finish work, safe access and checking automated estimates.
