Will AI replace middle school teachers? The data

Updated

Middle school teachers educate students, typically in sixth through eighth grades, and help them move from the fundamentals of elementary school to high school level content. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists their duties as planning lessons and teaching classes, assessing students and grading assignments, talking with parents about progress, giving students individual support, preparing them for standardized tests, and setting classroom rules and supervising students.

The short answer: no, on current evidence. The ILO's 2025 index rates secondary education teachers, the closest group, as not exposed to generative AI, with a score of 0.30. The BLS projects little or no change in employment of middle school teachers from 2025 to 2035, because of falling enrollment, not AI, with about 38,800 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed middle school teachers are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

Occupation (ISCO-08)ILO categoryMean task score (0 to 1)
Secondary Education TeachersNot exposed0.30
Primary School TeachersNot exposed0.26

The ILO scores groups of occupations, so these are the closest groups for middle school teaching, not a score for the job title itself. Both are in the lowest band: most of the work is teaching, supervising and supporting young people in a classroom.

Middle school teachersLittle or no change (0%)About 38,800

The BLS says the number of students in public middle schools is expected to decrease over the decade. It adds that if state and local governments run budget deficits, they may increase class sizes while keeping or reducing teaching staff. Most openings will come from replacing teachers who retire or leave, not from growth.

Where AI is helping

  • Drafting lesson plans, worksheets and quizzes for the teacher to adapt.
  • Giving first-pass feedback on routine work and practice for standardized tests.
  • Drafting messages to parents, which the BLS notes teachers already send through apps and websites.

What stays with middle school teachers

  • The classroom: teaching, setting rules and supervising students who are 11 to 14.
  • Knowing each student: spotting who is struggling and giving individual support.
  • Grading and judgment: deciding what good work looks like, including how students may use AI.
  • Parents: talking about progress and problems.
  • Checking AI help: generated lessons and answers can be wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

On BLS projections, enrollment and school budgets drive demand for middle school teachers. AI changes the preparation and paperwork around teaching, and teachers decide how it is used in class. Public school teachers need a state license for the grade level they teach. This page is general information, not career advice.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for middle school teachers at $64,370 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace middle school teachers?

Not on current projections. The BLS projects little or no change in employment from 2025 to 2035, mainly because of falling enrollment, with about 38,800 openings a year.

How exposed are middle school teachers to AI?

The ILO rates secondary education teachers, the closest group, as not exposed, with a score of 0.30.

Why is employment flat?

The BLS expects fewer students in public middle schools, and says budget deficits can lead to larger classes rather than more teachers.

What do you need to become a middle school teacher?

The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry education, and public school teachers need a state license for the grade level they teach.
