Will AI replace glaziers? Glass work and the data

Updated

Software can now take measurements from photos, produce cut lists and quote window and glass jobs, and some glass shops use automated cutting tables. Glaziers still measure on site, cut and fit glass, install frames and seal the joints so a building stays weathertight.

The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing glaziers. The ILO's 2025 index rates glaziers as not exposed, with a score of 0.14. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 2 percent growth for glaziers from 2025 to 2035, slower than average, with about 3,900 openings a year, mostly to replace workers who retire or change jobs. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed glaziers are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

What the BLS projects

The BLS says demand for glaziers comes both from new construction and from the need to repair and replace windows and other glass in existing buildings. Its outlook does not mention AI.

Where AI is helping

  • Measuring and quoting jobs from photos.
  • Cut lists and ordering from drawings.
  • Scheduling crews and deliveries.
  • Searching product specs and installation guides.

What stays with glaziers

  • Site work: removing old glass and fitting new glass in real openings.
  • Cutting and fitting: precise work with heavy, fragile material.
  • Sealing: weather seals and putty that keep water and air out.
  • Checking AI help: AI answers about specs or installation can be wrong, so the manufacturer's documents win, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

Quoting, ordering and scheduling get faster with software. The hands-on installation, often at height, stays skilled trade work.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for glaziers at $57,080 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: high school diploma or equivalent. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace glaziers?

Not on current evidence. The ILO rates glaziers as not exposed, and the BLS projects 2 percent growth from 2025 to 2035.

What drives demand for glaziers?

The BLS points to new construction and to repairing and replacing windows and glass in existing buildings.

How many glazier openings are expected?

The BLS projects about 3,900 openings a year, mostly replacing workers who leave.

What glazier work stays human?

Site measuring and fitting, cutting heavy glass, sealing and checking AI answers against manufacturer documents.
