Will AI replace coaches? Sports analytics and the data

Updated

AI tools can now tag game video, track player movement, build practice plans and suggest strategy from statistics. Coaches still teach technique, pick the team, call plays and motivate athletes through a season.

The short answer: current evidence points to AI giving coaches more data, not replacing them. The ILO's 2025 index rates sports coaches, instructors and officials at minimal exposure, with a score of 0.37. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 6 percent growth for coaches and scouts from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 36,400 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed coaches are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

What the BLS projects

The BLS ties growth to more participation in college and professional sports and to more demand for recreational sports instruction. Its outlook does not mention AI.

Where AI is helping

  • Tagging and clipping game and practice video.
  • Tracking player workload and movement data.
  • Scouting reports on opponents and prospects.
  • First drafts of practice and conditioning plans.

What stays with coaches

  • Teaching: showing and correcting technique in person.
  • Motivation: leading athletes through wins, losses and pressure.
  • Game calls: decisions in the moment, with a person accountable.
  • Checking AI help: generated stats and plans can be wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

More coaching uses video and data, from youth sports to the pros. Coaches who can read the numbers and still connect with athletes have more options. Athlete data is personal, so it needs care in AI tools.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for coaches and scouts at $47,320 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
