Workout apps can build a plan, count reps and adjust the program from a smartwatch. Some can even comment on form through a phone camera. Fitness trainers still do what keeps people coming back: watching technique closely, adapting to injuries and motivating people in person.
The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing fitness trainers. The ILO's 2025 index rates fitness and recreation instructors as not exposed to generative AI, with a score of 0.25. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 7 percent growth for fitness trainers and instructors from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 68,000 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
How exposed fitness trainers are
The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO category | Mean task score (0 to 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Fitness and Recreation Instructors and Programme Leaders | Not exposed | 0.25 |
What the BLS projects
| Occupation | Projected change 2025 to 2035 | Openings a year |
|---|---|---|
| Fitness trainers and instructors | Grow 7% | About 68,000 |
The BLS links demand to gym and class participation, employer wellness programs, and older adults staying active. Most trainers need a certification before working with clients.
Where AI is helping
- Workout plans and progress tracking in apps.
- Data from wearables on heart rate, sleep and activity.
- Booking, payments and client messages.
- Drafting class plans and social media posts.
What stays with the trainer
- Technique: demonstrating moves and correcting form in person.
- Safety: adapting for injuries and limits and enforcing safety rules.
- Motivation: the accountability that keeps people training.
- Checking AI help: app plans and nutrition tips can be confidently wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.
How the job is changing
Clients arrive with app data and AI-made plans, and trainers interpret and adjust them. Coaching people in person stays at the center. This page is about jobs and is not medical or fitness advice.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for fitness trainers and instructors at $47,160 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: high school diploma or equivalent. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
Questions and answers
Will AI replace fitness trainers?
Not on current evidence. The ILO rates fitness instructors not exposed to generative AI, and the BLS projects 7 percent growth from 2025 to 2035.
Can a workout app replace a personal trainer?
Apps can plan and track workouts, but correcting form in person, adapting for injuries and motivation still need a trainer.
How many fitness trainer openings are expected?
The BLS projects about 68,000 openings a year, on average, over the decade.
Do fitness trainers need certification?
The BLS says most trainers need a certification before working with clients, usually plus CPR and first aid.
