Will AI replace computer network architects? The data

Updated

Computer network architects design and build data networks, from office LANs to wide area networks and intranets. AI tools can now suggest configurations, analyze traffic and draft documentation. At the same time, companies building AI systems need more network capacity, which is work for architects.

The short answer: AI is both a tool for this job and a source of demand for it. The ILO's 2025 index rates computer network professionals at gradient 3 with a score of 0.52. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 8 percent growth for computer network architects from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 9,600 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed network architects are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

What the BLS projects

Computer network architectsGrow 8%About 9,600

The BLS says demand will grow as firms build new networks and upgrade existing ones. It says companies looking to use investments such as artificial intelligence will need these workers to upgrade their IT infrastructure, and that the continued expansion of cloud computing will add demand.

Where AI is helping

  • Drafting device configurations and network diagrams.
  • Analyzing traffic and spotting anomalies.
  • Searching vendor documentation.
  • Writing design documents and change plans.

What stays with network architects

  • Design decisions: trading off cost, capacity, security and resilience.
  • Migrations: moving live systems without taking the business down.
  • Accountability: owning the design when something fails.
  • Checking AI help: generated configurations can be wrong and can open security holes, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

Cloud and AI workloads push networks to grow, and AI tools speed up configuration and documentation. Reviewing generated configs before they go live is now part of the work. This page is general information, not career advice.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for computer network architects at $134,050 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace network architects?

Not on current projections. The BLS projects 8 percent growth from 2025 to 2035 and says AI investment adds demand for network upgrades.

How exposed are network architects to AI?

The ILO rates computer network professionals at gradient 3 with a score of 0.52.

How many openings are expected?

About 9,600 a year on average over the decade, according to the BLS.

What drives demand for network architects?

The BLS points to new and upgraded networks, company investments such as AI, and the expansion of cloud computing.
