Geographers study the Earth and how its land, features and people are spread across it. The work is already digital: the BLS says geographers use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and GPS, and need skills in GIS programming, databases and data visualization. AI now speeds up parts of that, such as classifying satellite images.
The short answer: AI is changing the tools more than the need for the job, which is tiny and roughly flat. The ILO's 2025 index rates sociologists, anthropologists and related professionals, the group that includes geographers, at gradient 2 with a score of 0.48. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 2 percent decline for geographers from 2025 to 2035, with about 100 openings a year, all from replacing workers who leave. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
How exposed geographers are
The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO category | Mean task score (0 to 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Sociologists, Anthropologists and Related Professionals | Gradient 2 | 0.48 |
The ILO scores groups of occupations, so this is the closest group for geographers, not a score for the job title itself.
What the BLS projects
| Occupation | Projected change 2025 to 2035 | Openings a year |
|---|---|---|
| Geographers | Decline 2% | About 100 |
The BLS counts about 1,500 geographer jobs in 2025 and projects about the same number in 2035. Its outlook does not mention AI.
Where AI is helping
- Classifying land cover in satellite and aerial images.
- Cleaning and joining large spatial datasets.
- Writing and debugging GIS scripts.
- Drafting map text and reports.
What stays with geographers
- Framing the question: deciding what to map and at what scale.
- Ground truth: fieldwork that checks what the imagery shows.
- Interpretation: explaining what spatial patterns mean for people and places.
- Checking AI help: automated classifications and generated code can be wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.
How the job is changing
GIS, programming and data skills were already central, and AI tools add to that toolkit while field checks and interpretation stay with the geographer. This page is general information, not career advice.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for geographers at $102,040 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
Questions and answers
Will AI replace geographers?
Not on current data. The closest ILO group is gradient 2, and the BLS projects a small 2 percent decline from 2025 to 2035 without naming AI.
How many geographers are there?
The BLS counts about 1,500 geographer jobs in 2025.
How many openings are expected?
About 100 a year on average over the decade, all from replacing workers who leave, according to the BLS.
What tools do geographers use?
The BLS lists GIS, remote sensing and GPS, along with GIS programming, database and data visualization skills.
