Design software already turns engineers' and architects' models into drawings, and AI features can now suggest layouts, check for clashes and fill in routine details. Drafters still turn designs into precise, buildable documents and catch the problems a model misses.
The short answer: software is already shrinking some drafting jobs, and AI may add to that, but the outlook differs by specialty. The ILO's 2025 index puts draughtspersons in minimal exposure, with a score of 0.35. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 1 percent growth for drafters overall from 2025 to 2035, slower than average, with declines for mechanical and electrical drafters and growth for architectural and civil drafters. It still expects about 14,400 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
How exposed drafters are
The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).
| Occupation (ISCO-08) | ILO category | Mean task score (0 to 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Draughtspersons | Minimal exposure | 0.35 |
What the BLS projects
| Occupation | Projected change 2025 to 2035 | Openings a year |
|---|---|---|
| Architectural and civil drafters | Grow 5% | In total |
| Electrical and electronics drafters | Decline 3% | In total |
| Mechanical drafters | Decline 6% | In total |
| Drafters, all other | Decline 7% | In total |
| Drafters, total | Grow 1% | About 14,400 |
The BLS says the increasing use of computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) is expected to lead to a decline in employment for many types of drafters, because these tools increase drafter productivity and let engineers and architects do tasks drafters used to do. Architectural and civil drafters are used more heavily in early design.
What software and AI are taking on
- Generating drawings and views from 3D models.
- Clash detection between structure, piping and wiring.
- Suggested layouts and routine detailing.
- Updating drawing sets when a design changes.
What stays with drafters
- Buildability: knowing how parts are made and installed, not just drawn.
- Standards and codes: getting dimensions, tolerances and notes right.
- Coordination: working between engineers, architects and builders.
- Checking AI help: generated details and dimensions can be confidently wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.
How the job is changing
Drafting is moving from drawing lines to managing models. Drafters who know BIM well, and who can check what automated tools produce, are in a stronger position than those who mainly produce 2D drawings.

Pay and how to get in
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for drafters at $68,090 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: associate's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.
Questions and answers
Will AI replace drafters?
Not fully, but software is already reducing some roles. The BLS projects 1 percent growth overall from 2025 to 2035, with mechanical and electrical drafters declining.
Does the BLS mention technology for drafting jobs?
Yes. It says CAD and BIM are expected to reduce employment for many types of drafters by raising productivity.
Which drafters are projected to grow?
Architectural and civil drafters, projected to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035.
What drafting work stays human?
Knowing what can be built, applying standards, coordinating with designers and builders, and checking automated output.
