Will AI replace construction managers? Scheduling software and the data

Updated

Construction software now builds schedules, tracks costs, reads drawings and flags clashes in building models before anything is built. AI tools add daily report drafts and progress tracking from site photos. Construction managers still run the job: people, money, safety and the problems that come up every day.

The short answer: current evidence does not point to AI replacing construction managers. The ILO's 2025 index rates construction managers as minimally exposed to generative AI, with a score of 0.34. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 9 percent growth from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 49,700 openings a year. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.

How exposed construction managers are

The International Labour Organization scores occupations' tasks from 0 (cannot be automated with generative AI) to 1 (could be done without a human operator), and groups them into gradients from 1 to 4, with 4 the most exposed; below them sit minimal exposure and not exposed (ILO Working Paper 140, 2025).

What the BLS projects

OccupationProjected change 2025 to 2035Openings a year

The BLS links growth to new buildings, infrastructure upgrades and energy retrofits, and notes that construction processes and building technology are becoming more complex, requiring greater oversight.

Where AI is helping

  • Schedules and look-ahead plans.
  • Cost tracking and change order logs.
  • Clash detection in building models.
  • Daily reports and progress tracking from site photos.

What stays with the construction manager

  • Running the site: coordinating trades, subcontractors and deliveries day to day.
  • Decisions: solving problems when plans meet real conditions.
  • Accountability: budgets, safety and building code compliance.
  • Checking AI help: schedules and reports drafted by software can be confidently wrong, which NIST calls confabulation (NIST AI 600-1). See checking AI output.

How the job is changing

Managers handle more data and more software, which the BLS sees as part of why more oversight is needed. Leading people on site stays human.

Pay and how to get in

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for construction managers at $114,990 in May 2025, against $50,980 for all workers. The typical education needed to enter is: bachelor's degree. See how this job compares in AI exposure by pay and AI exposure by education level.

Questions and answers

Will AI replace construction managers?

Not on current evidence. The ILO rates them minimally exposed to generative AI, and the BLS projects 9 percent growth from 2025 to 2035.

Can software run a construction project?

Software helps with schedules, costs and models, but coordinating people and solving site problems still needs a manager.

How many construction manager openings are expected?

The BLS projects about 49,700 openings a year, on average, over the decade.

What construction management work stays human?

Running the site, making decisions, being accountable for budget and safety, and checking software output.
