AI in the workplace: pros and cons, with the evidence

Updated

Lists of AI pros and cons are everywhere, often without evidence. This page sets out the main ones for people at work, says what the research does and does not show, and links to a deeper page on each.

The short answer: the clearest benefits are taking over tedious tasks and helping people work on more interesting ones; many workers surveyed by the OECD who use AI said it improved their enjoyment of work. The clearest risks are errors, more intense or more monitored work, privacy and security problems, and changes to some jobs. How AI is introduced, and who checks it, makes a large difference.

Pros and cons at a glance

ProsCons
Takes over tedious and repetitive tasksMakes confident mistakes that need checking
More time for complex, interesting workCan intensify work or speed it up
Help with drafting, summarizing and searchingCan be used to monitor and manage workers
Support for people learning new tasksPrivacy and data protection risks
New kinds of work around AISome occupations projected to shrink
Can make some work saferNew security risks, such as prompt injection

The evidence on benefits

In surveys of employers and workers in finance and manufacturing, the OECD Employment Outlook 2023 found that many workers who use AI reported more enjoyment at work and better performance, and linked this mainly to AI automating tedious or dangerous tasks. The surveys predate most generative AI tools, so they are an early signal. Details are on AI and job quality.

The ILO's 2025 index concludes that transformation of jobs, rather than their replacement, is the most likely impact of generative AI for most occupations. See AI job loss: what the data says.

The evidence on risks

What tips the balance

The same tool can be a help or a burden depending on how it is used. Clear rules, training, human review and involving workers in decisions all push toward the benefits. See introducing AI agents at work, AI policy for employees and how to train employees on AI.

Questions and answers

What are the pros of AI in the workplace?

Taking over tedious tasks, more time for complex work, help with drafting and searching, support for learning, new kinds of work and, in some cases, safer work.

What are the cons of AI in the workplace?

Confident errors, more intense or monitored work, privacy and security risks, and some occupations projected to shrink.

What does the evidence say about AI and job quality?

OECD surveys found many AI users reporting more enjoyment and better performance, while some reported more intensity and less control. The surveys predate most generative AI tools.

Will AI replace or change jobs?

The ILO concludes that transformation is the most likely impact of generative AI for most occupations, though some jobs are projected to shrink.

How can employers get the benefits and avoid the risks?

Clear rules, training, human review of AI output and involving workers in decisions about how AI is used.
